Pinewood Derby

As much as I dread the pinewood derby, I am glad that it's a part of my boys childhood. And actually, I'm so adamant that my boys have fun no matter what, they are actually prepped and primed for being the slowest car and never are, so they always have a good time.

 Garrett has been very creative with his car designs.

This one is a Podracer, with a little Anikan Lego guy driving it.

 

Yes, Dad helps.
He doesn't do it all. But the cutting and hard parts are done by him. 

And Garrett supervises that part. 

And he does a lot of the painting. Mom helped with the details.

There were a lot of creative cars! 

The dumb thing that happened is, they had to race it backwards because of the way the track starting point worked. So our whole strategy for weight distribution was thrown off!


But did my kids care. NO! Because they are good kids, who are good sports!
(Just like I've trained them to be, haha.)

Pinewood Derby time!

 It's that time of year again!

  Daniel and Garrett set to work making a derby car. This year's theme?
Epic Mickey!

Garrett got pretty creative with this one.
In the video game, Mickey has a paint brush that paint the scenery for the game (blue) and Thinner he uses to erase parts of the game (green). So Garrett came up with a design where the white car had the paint and the thinner splashed on either side and the Epic Mickey ears on the front.

 

It turned out pretty good. 

 And didn't do bad in the racing category either... :)

 

 Owen can't wait until it's his turn!

Garrett's First Pinewood Derby!

Here we go again! It's Garrett's turn!

We looked on the internet for ideas. You can find soooo many ideas there. But Garrett wasn't really excited about any of them.
He kept wanting to do a school bus, but Mom (who is always worried about everyone FEELINGS) thought he might not like it when he got to the derby and everyone had cooler cars.

I know....MOM, RELAX!
But Garrett's biggest interest right now is not sports cars. It's Diary of a Wimpy Kid. He can draw the the characters as good as the author can!

So a school bus was the perfect thing for him to showcase his interest AND his drawing skills!

 Drawing on wood was super hard. I ended up having to copy all of Garrett's drawings that he'd do on a paper. But I copied exactly what he drew and put where he told me to. So, it's essentially all Garrett's design!

And it wasn't even slow!!!

 Our Cub Master is amazing. There was popcorn and even nachos for the spectators!

 This was a great Derby! Proud of my boy!
